His father was Australian professional tennis player Peter Doohan (Peter Leslie Doohan), who was born in Newcastle. Hunter was raised mostly in the American South, where his father coached tennis, and primarily in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

Hunter is married to film producer Fielder Jewett.

Hunter’s paternal grandfather was Paul Leslie Doohan (the son of Leslie/Lesley Errol Doohan and Ethel May Barden). Hunter’s great-grandfather Leslie was the son of Michael Doohan and Annie Nance Whitton.

Hunter’s paternal grandmother was Beryl Thelma Vial (the daughter of Bernard Patrick Vial and Eileen Rowan). Bernard was the son of Peter Edwin Vial and Winifred Mary Colgan.
